Circuit Het Nieuwsblad
On Saturday 27 February, the first of six Flanders Classics took place with the ‘Circuit Het Nieuwsblad'. Start and finish of this traditional opener of the Belgian cycling season lay on the Sint-Pietersplein in Ghent. Early in the morning, the square was already packed with loads of cycling lovers eager to catch a glimpse of Tom Boonen, Philippe Gilbert or one of the other cycling gods.
The stand of head sponsor BASE attracted quite some curious people. Interested ones could test their cycling caliber there by virtually climbing one of the hills in the Flemish Ardennes.
The Spaniard Juan-Antonio Flecha was the eventual winner of the ‘Circuit', after an impressive solo of 20 kilometres. With the German Haussler and the American Farrar in second and third position, the honour stand was a very international tinted one. KPN Group Belgium already looks forward to the second Flanders Classic, ‘Across Flanders' on 24 March.
